Worth a Second Glance
People. Poetry is the hot new accessory. The puppy in a purse for 2014. But, many readers would describe poetry as inaccessible. Even some voracious literary readers say, “I just don’t get it.” Or, “It’s not my thing”, remembering the thees and thous or imagining lines that read:
Yes, the cricket
It is the one
The apple taught me
all I should know.
What!? I don’t get it!
The truth is that poems we read many years ago may not the best example of the niche that only poetry fills. Poets name things, capture feelings, articulate ideas. Each word is chosen deliberately, wrench tightened, and weighed with precision. Less than fifteen lines can shed hope, share a complete story, transform the day, or break your heart. When you find one that resonates, and you will, you will wish that you had written it yourself and swear that you never forget it.
